Introduction to Asheboro
Stella Navin
Asheboro is home to about 25,000 residents and is the largest city in Randolph County. The city’s largest attraction is the North Carolina Zoo, with more than 1,000 animals. The Zoo operates with an emphasis on promoting wildlife conservation. Within North Carolina, the Zoo has been doing local work to preserve endangered species and protected areas, particularly working to save North Carolina’s notable Eastern Hellbender amphibian. Outside of activities surrounding the North Carolina Zoo, downtown Asheboro has local artisans, restaurants, and the historic Sunset Theatre which opened back in 1930 for all to enjoy.
