Hop into Highlands

Sophie Clickner

In the Southern Appalachian Mountains lies the small town of Highlands, NC. It lies deep in the Nantahala Forest. A population of just around 1000 fosters the small-town feel; the Smoky Mountains' natural beauty draws tourists and brings locals outdoors. This rural town in Macon
County is a great way to step into nature, away from big cities. A charming downtown is at the center of Highlands, allowing the beauty of nature and history to blend.

This small-town feel and rurality do not shy away from luxury. Upscale restaurants such as The Highlands Supper Club, a fine-dining restaurant located in a log cabin, bring the traditional culture of Appalachia to the comforts of modernization. Highlands is also rich in the
arts. For example, the Martin-Lipscomb Performance Arts Center fosters creativity, bringing 250-plus performances to town. Highland fosters a simple life while providing you with everything you need and more.

Although Highlands may not be a bustling city, it offers something most cities cannot: convenient access to nature and serenity. Waterfalls are a staple in Highlands, with five all within a short drive. Perhaps this is why the town's motto is “The Height of Happiness,” a fun
play on words that encapsulates what the nature of the mountains brings. It is in the valley of the mountains, and walking out your door feels like a hike has already begun. If you crave something more competitive, nearby golf courses allow you to step into nature while embracing
the competitive side of human nature.

If the scenery is not enough to convince you, this town is pure bliss, the tradition and sense of community will fulfill that wish. From the Highlands Food and Wine Festival to the Highlands Jamboree, Highlands represents many different cultures in town. A sense of coziness
fills the snowy mountains during the holidays. You can relax in front of the fireplace, venture outside to go snow tubing, or visit the holiday market.

This “upscale” mountain town is a must-visit place on your bucket list. Since 1875, Highlands has developed into the beautiful town it is today, located in the heart of Appalachia.

Achieve peace and serenity with a single, rejuvenating weekend.
